Five Days with Alaskan Brown Bears

Five Days in Alaska

Jaimie and I just returned from five amazing days in the Alaskan wild. We spent four nights in Port Alsworth, a small community in the middle of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. From there, we took float planes to different Lake Clark and Katmai areas to watch brown bears in the wild and see the dramatic Alaskan scenery.

This was my third time visiting Alaska, and it continues to dazzle. Seeing such remote places as they have been for hundreds or thousands of years shows why we must continue protecting and conserving our beautiful landscapes across the country and world.

Watching brown bears wrestle, eat, and sleep without the burden of encroaching subdivisions and roads gives you a new appreciation and understanding of these beautiful creatures.

If you have thought about visiting Alaska, I strongly suggest you do. It's a magical place, and you'll be instantly hooked!

I'll have a more detailed article on this, but here's how our itinerary looked if you'd like to copy it!

Day 1: Few into Anchorage, transferred to a smaller airport, and flew to Lake Clark Resort

Day 2: Full day of bear watching in Katmai National Preserve (Specifically called Crosswind)

Day 3: Rained out, ended up canoeing and hiking around Port Alsworth

Day 4: Flew to Katmai National Park and saw bears at the famous Brooks Falls, flew over Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes

Day 5: Full day of bear watching/flightseeing along the Katmai National Park, Katmai Coast, and McNeil Game Range. Flew back to Anchorage on an evening flight. Spent the evening at Alyeska Resort.

Day 6: Explored Alyeska Resort at their Nordic Spa and Veilbreaker Sky Bridges. Flew home to Seattle.

Purchase bear photos.

(I will be adding to this as I slowly go through the 8700 photos I took!)

I have no idea how it's already September. July and August skirted right along, and now we're experiencing the changing seasons up here in Seattle. A buddy and I backpacked 35 miles into an alpine mecca with towering peaks and rugged glaciers. It was a glorious place and an excellent way to disconnect from the world for three days. I hope you had a lovely Labor Day Weekend and that this week has been kind to you. New Photos of Alaskan Brown Bears Are Available I'm thrilled to announce the...

Chasing Fall at these 10 National Parks Here is a quick breakdown of 10 National Parks nationwide known for stunning fall colors! Do note that the times are historical estimates, and you'll want to do some research on the specific places, as the weather plays a big role in when colors change. 1. Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Tennessee/North Carolina) Peak Time: Late September to early November Details: The park has a wide range of elevations, so fall colors start in the higher...

Happy August 1! How it's already August, I don't know. Summer seems to be flying by, though I'm telling myself we still have plenty of time to enjoy the good weather. As for me, I'm in San Diego this weekend at a bachelor party for one of my closest friends. While this isn't a 'quiet weekend,' it's a 'calm weekend' as it won't involve backpacking 15+ miles. I haven't been to Southern California since I moved out of Santa Barbara, and it's pretty nice to be back on the coast. 10 Awesome...
